Instructions for 1 Hour Jelly Bean Test

The one-hour jelly bean test will indicate how well your body is using glucose (sugar). 18 Brach’s jelly beans are the same as drinking the glucola drink

  1. You do not need to make an appointment to have the test done.
  2. For three days before your test, be sure to eat as you usually do. DO NOT EXCLUDE ANYTHING FROM YOUR DIET.
  3. The day of the test, you may eat up until the time you eat the jelly beans. Do not eat foods high in sugar (such as waffles with syrup, regular soda pop, and desserts). After you eat the jellybeans, DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING!
  4. The day of the test:
    • Eat the jelly beans (you need to eat them all within 2-3 minutes).
    • Note the time that you finish eating the jellybeans.
    • Bring your lab slip with you to the outpatient lab. You may go to either the lab at the Marion Area Health Center on Delaware A venue or the Outpatient Lab at Doctor’s Park.
    • Be at the lab about 45 minutes after eating the jellybeans in order to give you time to register prior to having your blood drawn.
    • Please tell the lab what time you ate your jellybeans. Your blood needs to be drawn exactly one hour after you finish.
    • If you have any questions, please call the office.
